Elegance in Resilience

     We can all be "diamonds in the rough", an abundant wealth of potential, all equally worthy of meticulous care. A raw gemstone can be woefully overlooked, through precise work in self-development brings out our unique inner shine of our hearts. Like gem-cutters it takes gaffes, discipline, and self-reflection to help shape individuals into better versions of themselves. This was the lesson my friends and I learned during our trip in Japan.

    We stayed for two weeks in the midst of autumn in 2024. We visited shrines, museums, gacha machines, and many many delightful cafés. We enjoyed walking over five miles per day and the train stations with ease. Unless, if you lose your thin flimsy baby-blue JR pass. Remembering the teller's disembodied voice to protect our pass with our lives, rattling through our weary heads. (she did not actually say that). Coming back home to our cozy Airbnb's with sore feet, and full tummies. Ready to start again the next day. The outdoor Onsen was especially relaxing, there is a clear appreciation for unity within nature. The shrines illustrates the harmony between human and nature best; it's ruggedness and its fragility. 

      I was inspired to paint a Komainu after seeing one at a shrine—its features weathered and half-blind, lightly veiled in moss and scattered ginkgo leaves. This guardian, crafted to ward off evil spirits, stands watch, preserving the peace of sacred grounds. The shrine itself is adorned with brilliant ruby-red accents, while a near-swarm of vibrant, dancing red dragonflies skittering nearby. The stout Komainu exuding a quiet, valiant commanding presence. Inscribed upon it is the kanji 納 (natto), loosely meaning "offering." At some point, someone carved this stone with care and intent, shaping it into a loyal guardian. I wanted to capture the flow of nature while highlighting ancient symbiotic harmony. Distinct and separate, yet inherently connected. Dedication to craftsmanship, with meticulous care given both outwardly and inwardly, valuable all the same.
